Hair today gone tomorrow

Poor Wayne Rooney just can’t seem to keep his hair on as it appears his £30,000 hair transplant has started to thin out.

The pictures of the 26-year-old emerged as he boarded a flight to Switzerland to play FC Basel in the Champion’s League tonight.

From what was a thick thatch on top now looks visibly thinner as the footballer continues his battle with alopecia.

Usually the hair is taken from thicker fuller parts at the back of the head and then is transplanted into the receding hair-line or bald spots.

However, hair transplants often take 6-12 months to settle in and those undergoing treatment can end up with patchy areas depending on whether the new hair grows in its new place.

If you are suffering from a form of alopecia it is essential that you explore all of the options and the possible side-effects before committing to a treatment.

Bowen therapy takes away the down side of pregnancy

As many pregnancy women will know that pregnancy can really take a toll on a lady’s body and well-being; from morning sickness and tiredness to physical pain such as back ache and sciatica. Renowned obstetrician and author of ‘The Gentle Birth Method’ Gowri Motha, believes Bowen Therapy can help many pregnant women. Motha, who boasts Elle Macpherson and Sam Taylor-Wood amongst her celebrity mums, prescribes Bowen for cases of back pain, nausea, pubic and pelvic pain, mastitis, temporo-mandibular joint(TMJ) problems and for mothers who are anxious and tense. She has also found that Bowen can help with pelvic tilt, which often causes problems with the positioning of the foetus, and that there are Bowen procedures that can encourage the baby's head to engage.

As with many other alternative therapies the success of a treatment mainly depends on visiting a legitimate, well trained practitioner. The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA), which is the largest UK professional association for qualified Bowen Therapists is an ideal place to find a suitable practitioner. Members of this association are qualified in Anatomy & Physiology and First Aid. They are also fully insured, abide by a strict code of conduct and ethics and are committed to a programme of continuing professional development.

Thanks from His Hair

It’s Thanksgiving this Thursday and  HIS Hair wanted to give thanks to all of their clients and supporters.

It has been such a fantastic year for them launching their new clinics on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and 5th Avenue in New York. They have had a great response from the new clinics and are looking to launch in Chicago in spring 2012.

To pay back their supporters they are offering a free gift from Headblade for every person who books a treatment with them! It’s their way of saying thanks, without handing out turkeys.

In fact, the free kit worth $49 comes in a HIS Hair and Headblade branded box in celebration of our new partnership together.

Head in to one of their clinics for a consultation, or they can arrange one for you on Skype.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The free kit contains:
Headblade slick shaving foam 8oz
Time Magazine Design Award Winner Headblade sport razor and replacement blades
Head Lube SPF 30 8oz
Worth $49

Could QR be the new code for fashion?

Footballers from Bromfield FC look like they are starting a new trend by having QR (Quick Response) codes shaved into the back of their heads.

The team took to their razors in a PR stunt for Betfair’s new mobile site before their FA Cup tie with Leyton Orient.

Celebrity stylist Daniel Johnson, whose clients include, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, was given the tough task to shave the styles into the sportsmen’s hair.

He said, “I’m used to styling footballers’ hair – and trust me I’ve had some weird requests from them before – but this was in a different league. The QR cuts certainly put my skills to the test.”

QR codes have to be incredibly accurate to be effective, even the slightest hair out of place could stop it from working hair, but Daniel Johnson is famous for his sharp cuts, so did the QR Code work?

Alex from Betfair said, “I’m pleased to say that the QR code did work, we based the haircut on a working QR code which our mobile team developed specially. Although to have successfully scanned the players’ hair you would have had to get up close and personal with them, and not too many people had that opportunity!”

Unfortunately, the new hair style didn’t do much for their performance as they lost 3-0 in the tie.

Oh well, at least they have their lovely heads to admire.

Movember is upon us!

It has come to that time of year again as a phenomenon sweeps the world. All around we see men starting to sport hair growth along their upper lip to raise money and awareness for men’s health charities.

The majority of men, even those losing hair in other places, are able to grow a moustache in a month and there’s no better reason to do it for than charity. In fact, we think it can add quite a distinguished look to a bald or cropped head. (See below)

To join, all ‘Mobro’s’ have to do is have a clean shave at the beginning of the month, register online and then leave their moustache to grow! People are encouraged to donate and throw parties at the end of the month to celebrate the moustache.

Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches, including celebrity ones, on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. To date, the campaign has raised over £106 Million worldwide and that is set to rise as the idea catches on.

According to the organisers, big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year.

Is your man taking part in Movember? Do you think it looks sexy? Send us some pictures! We would love to see!

A not so distant look into the future of hair restoration

Whilst looking at various alternatives for hair loss we came across a story in The LosAngeles Times regarding robot- assisted hair restoration!

The technique is said to use robotic technology “ARTAS” to pluck hairs from the thicker fuller part of your head at the back and sides and then move them to the balding areas where necessary.

It normally takes eight to nine hours to individually harvest, by hand, the 1,000 follicle clusters needed to build a full mane of hair, according to Dr. James Harris, director of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado in Denver.

However the machine is said to be able to complete the treatment much faster with a quicker recovery time according to Dr. Harris who has started treating patients after the robot was cleared by the FDA in America.

Whilst the robot is carrying out the treatment, the Doctor can watch on a monitor from another room to keep an eye on its handy work. The technique uses a special blade that removes the follicle without damaging it.

According to the story, the usual treatment would cost $5,000 to $10,000, but because it saves the physician time, they offer patients a discount if they let “ARTAS” do the follicle extraction.

Before you conjure up images of C-3PO chatting to you about your holidays whilst beautifying your Barnett, the treatment is currently licensed it to only the Restoration Robotics Inc. of Mountain View, California, the company that makes ARTAS.

Autumn is the season for hair loss

The weather has taken a turn for the chillier, the nights are drawing in, we’ve swapped fake tan for tights, maxi dresses for thick jumpers and invested in this season ‘must have’ boots (we just love these River Island hiking heels below, though we wouldn’t recommend climbing any mountains in them!).

All of this can only mean one thing - Autumn is here.

Known usually for falling leaves, scientists have identified this time of year may also mean falling hair…

The study followed 800 healthy women over a period of six years who experienced most hair loss through the Autumn months.

This is due to the hairs natural cycle as a human hair grows for between two and six years. At any one time, 90 per cent of our hair is growing, while the remainder is in a resting state (known as the telogen stage) for between two to six months, before it falls out.

The researchers found that most of the hairs were in the ‘resting’ or telogen stage around July, meaning most hairs fell out around October.

However, this doesn’t mean you need to panic buy hair extensions. Dr Hugh Rushton, from the University of Portsmouth, explains the evolution behind hair loss. We do not need hair for survival so if it's a choice between your hair growing or keeping blood going to vital organs, the former will suffer.

'Hair is an incredibly sensitive barometer. It can even forewarn you when there are no other symptoms of illness.'

To purchase the beautiful boots go to

We've been Bowen crazy!

It was an exciting day in the Furore office yesterday, as a variety of willing models enjoyed a Bowen Technique therapy session whilst trying their best to strike a pose!

The shoot took place to show the public the wide range of people and ages Bowen Therapy is suitable for. Anyone can have the treatment including, men and women, children and the elderly, sporty types and pregnant women.

For anyone who hasn’t experienced The Bowen Technique, it is a natural, drug-free non-invasive complementary therapy which was invented in Australia and introduced to the UK in the 1990’s. It works differently to a conventional oil massage you may have received where pressure is used to aid recovery and injury. Instead Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise the problem and make the change itself.

Using primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

The treatment has some celebrity followers with Bear Grylls and Radio 2 Presenter Janey Lee Grace both raving about their Bowen experiences.

Our models also appeared to have really enjoyed the variety of moves carried out by the practitioner, as you can tell by the photos!

The ever growing His Hair Clinic launches at sought after venue, The Cube, Birmingham

From opening their first clinic in Harborne, Birmingham five years ago the Birmingham born and bred duet Ian Watson and Ranbir Rai-Watson have now  joined forces with award winning celebrity hair stylist Adee Phelan to offer MHT scalp pigmentation in his new salon in Birmingham.

The salon is located in the highly anticipated luxury retail and leisure complex The Cube and will offer the opportunity for individuals to have MHT®  scalp pigmentation treatments and consultations in a private room at the salon. Being in the much sought after location of The Cube provides a more central location within the city for clients who are seeking MHT® treatment in a more luxurious location with a top hotel, restaurants and designer retailers within the complex.

The partnership between Adee Phelan and HIS Hair means that his new salon now caters for all types of hair wants and needs, from haircuts, colours and hair loss treatment in HIS Hair’s separate treatment rooms within the salon.

Award-winning Celebrity hairdresser, Adee Phelan believes MHT® is a great alternative to hair restoration options that are currently available. He says “I came across MHT® and thought it was an amazing technique. Finally there’s a product on the market that men who suffer from hair loss can relate to. Nowadays, cropped hair cuts are worn by a lot of men, so MHT® is perfect for those who want an on trend look.”

Due to the ever increasing popularity of the treatment there are also clinics on the prestigious Harley Street in London, Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, as well as in Hong Kong and Marbella.
And next week HIS Hair will be launching a New York clinic on Fifth Avenue. There are also plans to open a Paris clinic in November and a Manchester clinic in December, this year. Will there be an end to their success?

Confidence - it's all in the hair

Whether its making sure they’re wearing their lucky pants, tapping ‘This is Anfield’ sign on the way through the tunnel, or waiting to come out until they are the last one on the pitch, footballers are notorious for strange rituals to help boost their ability and confidence.

But recently we have seen a new more hair raising issue affecting our footballers and their confidence. For in-the-spotlight-strikers Torres and Rooney, perfecting their Barnet seems to have made all the difference.

Just one year ago Wayne Rooney was hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons; sex scandals, speculation for his future at the red side of Manchester and the serious slump in scoring goals. The balding star was slating by the critics with many believing he was past his peak and the spiral of poor form continued with a total tally of 11 goals for the season.

Fast-forward to post Rooney-hair-transplant-gate and we see a different footballer on the pitch. Aside from the improved hair-line we see a striker who makes hitting the back of the net look easy. With 9 goals already including two hat-tricks, Rooney looks set to be a contender for the golden boot to go along with his golden locks.

Fernando Torres was once a hero at Liverpool, the kop would sing his praises and his song, almost claiming he was a scouse, but that all changed when the number nine decided to take a trip to the hairdressers.

His arm-band may have said he was a red, but his lacklustre performance on the pitch certainly didn’t. The Spaniard spent most of his time dubiously getting free kicks and miss-firing shots causing his cheeks to turn the same colour as his shirt. The World Cup was a similar story as he was sidelined for the latter games, not scoring a single goal.

His ridiculous price-tag put more pressure on the striker as he made the trip from Liverpool to London swapping colours en route. His performance and mood stayed Blue as he looked awkward against his former club beginning yet another goal drought. His miss of the millennium against Manchester United and two-footed straight-red tackle left Abramovich wondering why he had spent so much for so little.

But now Torres’s blonde bob hair has returned, Alice band and all, his confidence has grown too. He is more aware and alert, making runs and superb passes, being in the right place at the right time, looking like the Torres we all once knew. His goal scoring tally is slowly creeping up and the only difference is the length of his hair.

Co-incidence?

Ryan Giggs has reportedly had £30,000 hair treatment and he has played consistently since the mid-nineties! Wesley Sneijder is said to have recently visited a Hair Transplant clinic and is said to be verry happy with the results.
Above all, their hair has begun to grow again and, with it, like Wayne Rooney after his Harley Street transplant, their confidence has been restored.

HIS Hair feature on Telegraph Style Blog

‘Gone today, hair tomorrow: the world of hair transplants’

Rooney-transplant-gate caused the mysterious underworld of male hair grooming to come directly into the (bald)spot-light, with more men enquiring into the options available.

Lee Kynaston author of groomingguru.co.uk editor of Men’s Health online and writer for The Daily Telegraph talks through the different possibilities for today’s ‘follicley’ challenged man:

As well as transplants there are laser therapy treatments, which claim to bring follicles back to life, stimulating hair growth. There are nifty little weaves that attach to your existing barnet, and a concealer called Nanogen, essentially microscopic hairlike fibres that you sprinkle on your scalp like hundreds and thousands, and which cling to your thinning strands (nanogenhair.com).”

“There is even hope for billiard-ball baldies in the shape of a tattooing treatment that creates the effect of scalp stubble (hishairclinic.com).”

HIS Hair (Hair Improvement Specialists) is the pioneer of the MHT® scalp pigmentation treatment that creates a short shaved look for balding men. MHT® is a simple solution with virtually no down-time meaning that men can go back to their daily life full of confidence.

(From the article) Mark Simpson, author of Metrosexy: A 21st Century Self-Love Story and a leading authority on the shifting nature of masculinity said; 'Rooney's outing was a watershed moment, It's a sign that something has changed. These days, there's much less shame about men caring about their appearance. In fact, there's quite a lot of out-of-the-closet pride.'

Travolta’s bad hair days

It’s a case of hair today and gone tomorrow as John Travolta has been recently spotted with and without the hair-piece in the same day.

Now having admitted to having to using a weave to give him the look of his younger days, he looks to have had some moments of confusion deciding to go without.

The 57-year-old Hollywood actor was seen sporting a much balder look after playing tennis with some friends, but then hours later he had a beaming smile on his face with a thick full head of hair.

The more natural look of receding hairline and thinning hair is a far-cry from his most famous role as ‘Danny Zuko’, where he had a plethora of luscious locks he continuously combed to make the girls swoon.

The Grease star seems to be unsure of the best method for balding solutions, however to create a look with more consistency, he could turn to MHT® scalp pigmentation technique that provides a more modern permanent style, than the old-fashioned toupee or weave.

The ground-breaking scalp pigmentation technique was pioneered and launched 9 years ago by HIS Hair and creates a natural looking simulation of micro hairs on the scalp, creating the appearance of a short cropped hair style, like Wentworth Miller and Vin Diesel.

MHT® scalp pigmentation involves no surgery, no scarring and no hair pieces, meaning Travolta could keep a constant hair style and avoid bad hair days like today.

Two and a Half Hairs

As 28 million tuned in to watch the first episode of Two and a Half Men since the bizarre exit of Charlie Sheen, the focus was not on Ashton Kutcher, Charlie’s replacement, but on Jon Cryer and his re-appearing hair.

On screen Jon Cryer plays the hapless Alan Harper who lives in the shadow of his rich, alcoholic, womanising brother, Charlie Harper (played by Sheen). Life imitating art anyone?

Off screen this week, Cryer was spotted by Daily Mail finishing the Malibu Triathlon with a thinning crown on top, but then hours later he was up on stage at the Emmy Awards presenting an award whilst showing off a full head of hair?

Forget the confusion surrounding Charlie’s demise from the show, this is the real mystery!

For 46-year-old Cryer, the thought of going bald must be too much to ‘bare’ as experts believe he has used a toupee or weave, however there are more natural looking ways to create a look with thinning hair – as the MHT® scalp pigmentation proves!

HIS Hair have created MHT® scalp pigmentation that gives the appearance of a cropped shaved look for balding men.

With a clinic currently being opened in LA, Jon Cryer would have no difficulty heading into the treatment centre and coming out looking rugged and natural, rather than pretending he used miracle grow in the afternoon!

Midlands Media Challenge – Furore girls don’t finish last!

The challenge was simple, get all the PROs and Journalists from in and around Birmingham into a room, throw down the gauntlet of a pub quiz style evening and let the competition begin.

The room was actually the upstairs of the very lovely ‘Nuvo’ bar near Broad Street, and the quizmaster was the extremely distinguished Bob Warman off of Central News fame, complete with cheeky jokes and a warming smile.

Prize wise, it was not just the champagne that got us excited, or the Milk Tray that had Nav’s eyes lit up, but the prestigious honour of hopefully not coming last in the Midlands Media Challenge (we had high hopes).

So how did the Furore PR girls get on?

General knowledge – we’re not that blonde you know. 8 out of 10 thank-you!

Music – Steph whipped out her extensive knowledge of funk and soul to gain maximum points!

Media – This was our speciality baby! But who did invent the radio? Answers on a postcard!

Picture – If only Nikki could remember The South Bank Show, but she could hum the tune!

Birmingham – We are ashamed to say we didn’t know Birmingham’s motto ‘Forward’! Did you?

Overall, we came SIXTH (from bottom)! Well, we were pleased anyway.

With over £2000 raised for Birmingham’s Air Ambulance it was a successful night all round, so we’re off to start revising for the next one...

Thanks to the CIPR for organising the fantastic event.

To pay or not to pay

We were flicking through the pages of yesterday’s (Sunday 21st August) The People and we saw an article about a young man who has had received treatment for hair loss courtesy of the NHS. The revelation that someone he was able to get free treatment from the NHS simply because he had a receding hair line certainly opened up a can of worms. It conjured up the debate about whether hair loss treatments should be made available free on the NHS. If people are able to get gastric bands, breast augmentations and ears pinned back, why can’t they have MHT or hair transplants made available for no cost?

The average price for a Gastric band is £7000, since it was made available on the NHS in 2000; thousands of patients have opted for the treatment. In fact obesity related surgery costs the NHS £32million each year.

Breast augmentation whether it is a reduction or enlargement can only be provided on the NHS if someone is under severe psychological distress with the average cost of surgery being £4000.

Having a procedure to pin ears back or ‘Otoplasty’ as it is otherwise known is the most common cosmetic surgical procedures in the UK and America, the average cost of pinning the ears is £2000. Whilst it is difficult to get surgery free on the NHS due to the fact that it is classed as cosmetic surgery, exceptions can be made. If the patient is mentally traumatised by the appearance of their ears, treatment can be provided on the NHS.

With that in mind, surely the noted effects of hair loss such as low self esteem, lack of confidence and extreme negative personal views of appearance would mean that treatment for hair loss would meet the criteria for being eligible to become free on the NHS. There are many men who suffer in silence about their hair loss finding it difficult to seek helpful solutions are gaining adequate treatment. As we’ve noted over the past year or so it’s always been quite easy for celebrities to spend tens of thousands of pounds on hair transplants – an option that is inconceivable for average men who aren’t millionaires. For those men who don’t want to have such a drastic procedure such as a hair transplant MHT is a simple and discrete option for GP’s to discuss with patients.

We think it’s important to highlight the distress that millions of men in the UK endure on a daily basis due to hair loss issues.

Gaga goes ga-ga over student's talent!

We’re sending out our congrats to a little known student that obviously has a wealth of talent! Rebecca Short is currently living a dream come true as it was revealed that Lady Gaga had opted to wear one of her fashion creations. Gaga wore the nude coloured rubber dress at a press conference in Singapore – as usual all eyes were on the singer and Rebecca was stunned to hear and see that Gaga was wearing the dress! The singer’s stylist had seen Rebecca’s dress at Graduate Fashion Week in London and was obviously drawn to it.

The most exciting part of this story is the fact that Rebecca is a fashion student from Birmingham City University – this just proves the amount of talent that the city of Birmingham has to offer. The region is overflowing with creative talent just waiting to explode. We wonder who the next celebrity will be to pick up on talent of Brum……Beyonce, Rihanna, Angelina?? Who knows!

Prince William’s ‘Heir’ raising issues

Prince William is no stranger to the alopecia anguish that plague men up and down the country, and now the taboo subject of this thinning crown has been highlighted by none other than the Queen’s own hairdresser Ian Carmichael.

The 50-year-old cheekily addressed the Heir’s hair by stating “I think William should have a hair transplant, I know he doesn’t want to because he thinks people would criticise him for it but there’s really no shame in it. It’s not just Wayne Rooney, so many men are having them.”

Although transplants are becoming more popular, they take time to undergo and patients need weeks of down-time after the procedure; something that in-demand William hasn’t got.

Ian has tended to her majesty’s royal locks for 14 years and said recently “William had braces on his teeth when he was younger and it’s the same principle. It’s all cosmetic, isn’t it? Hair and teeth are the key to looking young.”

The cosmetic procedure that the Prince could turn to is innovative hair loss solution called MHT® (Micro Hair Technique). The MHT® treatment is a non-invasive, non-surgical scalp pigmentation process which replicates the look of incredibly short individual hair follicles on receding hairlines and balding areas of the scalp, thus disguising signs of hair loss. The effect created is of a short, cropped hair style and the pigments can be tailored to each person’s shade of hair and length required (i.e. grade one or grade two crop).

Here is an artist’s impression of what the Prince could look like an a few years time. However with the MHT® the Heir to the throne could be sporting a stylish cropped hair style, making him look more Beckham than balding.

Here is another Prince who would benefit from the MHT®:

Prince Albert II of Monaco married his young bride in July, but failed to impress the media with his bald spot and receding hairline that could be made to look like a natural cropped look with MHT®.

The co-creator of MHT® and Managing Director of HIS Hair Clinic Ian Watson said: “When you’re in the spotlight like members of the Royal family you are under constant scrutiny and pressure to look good. With MHT® you can create a natural look without the hefty price tag and recovery time needed for a hair transplant.”

HIS Hair Clinic opened their first stand alone clinic on Harley Street earlier this year and due to its success the clinic is now in the process of expanding. Along with the new clinic on Harley Street, HIS Hair Clinics have treatment centres all around the world including; China, France, Germany, Holland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and LA and New York in the US.

Furthermore, HIS Hair Clinic understand the personal affects hair loss can have on an individual and all practitioners are respectful of the client’s discretion whether it be an average Joe, a footballer or the future King.
